It stands on the grounds that were
once our Little League,
Leko-Lankershim Field, that was awhile ago way before
the freeway when there was just a wash behind the Score Board.

I would like to thank the L.A.P.D. and The L.A.F.D.60s for their
concern and compassion when my Mom passed a few years ago.

Trading sex for housing is illegal. CraigsList has been hit with this before. Apparently they have a self-policing system but it's not foolproof. Many bad things that have come out of his site including trafficking in young girls and real estate fraud.

This is the kind of crap that has really caused the site - which is an otherwise great idea - to lose all credibility.

NoHo Crime Update

Crime update – (Week ending June 25TH, 2011 )

Violent crime in North Hollywood Division has decreased 10.49%
Property crime has decreased 13.58 %
Overall repressible crime for the Division year- to- date has decreased 13.20%

My basic car area covers Oxnard to Magnola and Colfax to Clyborne. I have also seen some decreases in property and violent crime BUT the decrease is not as drastic as the overall numbers of the division. They are good but I’m seeing an increase in crime start to appear. This is especially noticed along the Magnolia Blvd and the Burbank Blvd. corridor.

A few concerns where we see a pattern of crimes involve BIKE THEFTS and DISTRACTION type crimes. Bike thefts have exploded in my area. I don’t know if the warm weather, the high price of gas or more people trying to go green. If you like your bike- secure it. Almost 100 thefts have been reported in the division this year. What stands out is the majority of victims DO NOT have their bike serial number written down. This is essential in getting your property back to you if and when we recover it.

The crimes involving distractions usually victimized the elderly. It involved someone acting as an employee of a City agency (DWP / GAS) knocking on your door and advising the homeowner they need to be escorted to the rear yard to inspect something. While this is going on, another suspect enters the residence and removes the victim’s property. On a few incidents, a child has been involved. An adult knocks on the door advising their child is in need of the restroom or a glass of water. As the homeowner is distracted, another suspect enters and searchers the property.

Be aware of any suspicious activity. Use your cell phones to take photos if it can be done safely. Forward me any information you think may assist us in deterring or solving crime.

Nation Night Out is August 2nd at the North Hollywood Park. This is a yearly nationwide event that brings the police and the community together. The event will include entertainment, food and tables sponsored by some local area business and City organizations. The event starts at 6pm. Hope to see you there.

Jack Witt: Crimefighter

Chamber of Commerce Past-President and Local Fitness Trainer Jack Witt made a citizens arrest in North Hollywood Park Sunday. A man was walking up and down Magnolia Blvd and Tujunga Blvd trying to get into people's parked vehicles. Jack noticed the man doing this while waiting for a client to show up for a workout at the park, and immediately confronted him about it. Jack flagged down a police officer driving by and made a citizens arrest on the spot.

Remember to always put your valuables in your trunk while visitng the park, and always lock your doors.

In America, you certainly have the right to decorate your home any way you want, but apparently not in Valley Village.

Ten North Hollywood High students were commissioned to paint a Graffiti Art mural on a homeowner’s private fence. But the City came out and fined her, and is now forcing her to paint over it. This despite other murals in the area being allowed.

Certainly someone with a lot of time on their hands complained. Supporters are appealing to Paul Krekorian and hope you will too.

Stephen Box Food Truck Festival

CD4 Council Candidate Stephen Box held a food truck festival in the NoHo Arts District Sunday. Food truck operators are generally supporting Box as incumbent Tom LaBonge has been essentially hostile towards the popular businesses. A number of locals turned out to meet with Box and sample fare from a variety of trucks.

And I had the chance to catch a few of them at Hollywood Stories, produced and hosted by writer/comedian Pauline Williams, at the hip Amsterdam Cafe right here in Downtown NoHo.

Williams, a native of the Hoosier state, has an extensive resume as a comic, writer, author, musician, singer, journalist, poet - you name it - Pauline has done it.

Hollywood Stories showcases writers with interesting and great stories to tell. When I attended this week on the bill were Williams, actor and author Peter Coca and comedian Mel Kohl.

Williams regaled the audience with a cornucopia of adroitly composed and brilliantly rhythmic poetry and short stories, some touching on tales of lost or unrequited love. Coca performed a brilliantly delivered piece that was way beyond this reviewer's ability to truly critique but seemed to combine elements of Lenny Bruce and Dr. Seuss. Rounding out the bill was Kohl with a humorous riff on the self-indulgent absurdity that is, Starbucks.

The Amsterdam Cafe itself is really quite the facility - reminscient of the NoHo BoHo coffee house scene those of us active locally in the 90s may remember but with a more modern elegance. Tasty food and beverages compliment hookah smoking and a lovely even larger than the main room zen patio definitely beckons me to hang out there on a warm spring evening soon.

NoHo Supermarket Site Becomes Yet Another Gym

Apparently we were very wrong.

The news we are getting is that the former HOWS space in NoHo has been leased by a gym. We had heard that Gold's Gym had previously pulled permits; the news I am hearing now is that the site will be the latest branch of 24 Hour Fitness.

Considering that no less than four membership based gyms operate within a two - three block radius of the site one wonders why the need for a grocery store was not met.

As it stands, the broker handling the sale, Eric Reuveni, made a statement that most of the residents "do not know how to cook." Thus, HOWS or any other grocery store isn't right for the area.

Unbelievable.

A Market Comes to NoHo?

Fresh on the heels of news that HOWS, the former occupant of the grocery store space at NoHo Commons, is closing all but one of the rest of it's stores and essentially going out of a business as a chain, comes very reliable information that next week the announcement will come that a new food retailer plans to open in the space.

Could it be Henry's Farmers Market?

We had heard earlier this year rumors that Henry's was coming to the location. But Joe B. from Mayor Sam said that permits had been pulled to build a Gold's Gym there. However today we have learned from sources that principles involved in the transaction have confirmed a market is coming and that the name will be announced next week.

Henry's, a chain with roots going back before World War II, operates 35 locations in Southern California with a retro-themed, natural foods approach similar to Whole Foods but at a lower price point. Indeed Henry's had actually been owned by Whole Foods before it was aquired by a subsidiary of Smart and Final in 2007.

With a new market moving in and the demise of the HOWS' chain it's sweet justice for a community who was blamed for killing its best chance at an upscale type grocery store. Looks like it wasn't our fault after all.

Let's hope they re-open the wine room, too! Glass of pinot grigio please!

Food Truck Happy Hour Kicks Off at Skinny's!

The idea is this. A popular local watering hole opens its doors for after work hours and invites some of the great local LA food trucks to park right out front allowing folks to order up their favorite meal and bring it into the bar. This is a great thing for NoHo and Skinny's Lounge is serving it up.

Monday, October 25th was the kick-off and official "ribbon cutting" with participants from the local Chamber on hand to welcome Skinny's and the food trucks to our hood. Among the trucks participating were Lardon, The Munchie Machine, Cafe con Leche and Papa's Tapas.

According to the folks at Skinny's there will be at least one truck outside each evening with live music inside. Let's hope it draws more people to NoHo!

I grew up in North Hollywood, that's NoHo to you hip people,
walking or biking to the park to give out checkers and balls
receiving free swimming pool tickets.
Other times spending the hot Valley afternoons in the wonderful library,
which had no air conditioning nor restrooms
and computers were not yet -dewey decimal.
The Fire Station for excitement and
Thrifty Drug on Lankershim for 5¢ ice cream cones.
And of course the El Portal Theater was the coldest for movies,
like Godzilla or War of the Worlds,
where we lined up so early we could go into 'free' movies put on
by various religious organizations -theology before science fiction.

Now I bring this all up because those were the few places to,
well let's say, relax or relieve one's self.

Final Night at HOWS Wine Room

As we reported Thursday (and confirmed by LAist's Zach Behrens) HOWS market in NoHo is closing, a victim of poor sales. One of the more interesting aspects of the market was it's wine tasting room which developed a strong local following. Sunday night the Wine Experience had it's swan song with a packed audience. The rest of HOWS will close down slowly over the next month or so.

We've heard reports that HOWS management will attend a meeting called by officials of the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency and members of the Mayor's staff. Insiders have told us however that HOWS decision is final and it's not likely the City could offer anything for the business to remain open.

Patrons enjoy a last glass of wine at HOWS.

A final toast in honor of HOWS longtime wine room manager Bill Essitier.

Panera Bread's Toilet Gender Discrimination

I sent the following email to Panera Bread's customer service department just a few moments ago:

I'm a regular customer at Panera and sometimes come to use the wifi to do work on my computer in your pleasant environment. When I sit for several hours I usually buy a meal a well as drinks and sometimes another meal or snack later.

Today I have done just that at your North Hollywood location when I ordered a meal. I asked to use the restroom and was told it was not working. I asked if i could use the women's restroom and was told no that was not allowed. I was told to go to the Coffee Bean next door which wasn't practical since I had ordered a meal and had my computer out which I wasn't about to either leave unattended nor pack with me to go to the Coffee Bean.

Therefore I am forced to finish my meal and then leave unable to finish my work and having a less than pleasurable experience at Panera. I will probably be back but this is a bit disappointing. I also find it discriminatory to provide restroom facilities to one gender but not another.

When It Comes to Universal City Development Hasty Decisions Will Have Long Term Impact on our Community

As a board member of the Mid Town North Hollywood Neighborhood Council, I feel as I have been entrusted with a deep responsibility to our community as a whole, not just one part of town or demographic. I have the opportunity to help make our neighborhood a better place, and make sure each and every member of our community has all the information they need to make informed decisions when it comes to charting the future and long term viability of our community. That commitment to my community, the one in which I was born and raised, has led me to write this article.

For more than a century, our neighborhood has continued to re-invent itself. If anything is consistent in NoHo, it's change. Starting from our days as a way station for those on the way to the San Fernando Mission, our time as wheat fields and cow pastures (ever wonder why Lankershim is diagonal? The road was based on the way the cows wandered), North Hollywood's reign as the "Home of the Peach," to the film business, television, aerospace and now once again re-branding as an arts and theatre zone. Even our name has constantly been a work in progress from Kawenga to Toluca to Lankershim to North Hollywood to NoHo. Once again, we're morphing into something new. Just take a look around at all the exciting things that are happening. There is new development,new restaurants, stores and nightspots, even the new Laemmle Theatres are coming soon and will complement our thriving arts district. But even with these projects, our community is not immune to the economic struggles facing the nation, our state and Los Angeles County, and many of our neighbors are fighting each day to keep their heads above water.

With that in mind, we need to focus on investment in industries that make our community vibrant and strong -- such as the entertainment industry. We have to search for wise investments with the potential to create new jobs at nearby studios and at local entertainment support companies. We need investments to bring in architectural and software firms, IT companies, public relations firms, law offices and other businesses that pay well enough so that we don’t have to work in Santa Monica in order to afford to live in NoHo. In our neighborhood, we need high-paying jobs close to where we live.

So how does that happen? Smart development needs to be objectively considered in and near NoHo, including development such as NBC Universal’s Vision Plan, which is now called the NBC Universal Evolution Plan.

NBC Universal has proposed a 25-year plan for their 391-acre Universal City property. It’s my understanding that their plan includes new studio facilities, some new retail and other improvements at CityWalk, and, new housing opportunities.

I don’t have all of the details myself, as the City’s Draft Environmental Impact Report or EIR, has not yet been released for public review. But what I do know is that NBC Universal’s plan will create thousands and thousands of new full and part-time jobs, and that our City and County will benefit from tens of millions of dollars in new annual tax revenues. And just as important, the project includes major upgrades to local roads, streets and freeways, all with the goal of improving traffic and circulation in the area.

We all know that Universal City is a major job center for the entertainment industry. So it seems to make sense that locating housing next to or near jobs can help people limit the use of their cars and instead use Metro, take shuttles or walk to where they work, live or shop.

With our economy in shambles, this project could mean the world to the Valley and to greater Los Angeles. But at this moment, we are still missing some important pieces of the puzzle such as the Draft EIR on the project, which once released, will provide answers to many important questions. We have also not had a chance to meet with NBC Universal representatives to hear a presentation on the project -- and with so many pieces of the puzzle missing it would be premature for us to take a position on the project at this time.

Yet there are those who think otherwise. People outside of NoHo have approached the Neighborhood Council and have requested that we take a position opposing this development.

I, for one, would like to refrain from taking a position on any issue brought to this Council until I hear from all parties concerned just as I wouldn’t vote for an important leader without hearing from all the candidates. For me this is about the importance of information and the right and duty we have to make an informed decision.

I, personally, have quite a few questions for NBC Universal and other questions that simply can’t be answered by either side until we have access to the Draft Environmental Impact Report. I’d like to be able to ask those questions and absorb the answers before I vote to support or reject anything. As a board member, I believe that is my responsibility to each and every one of you.

The Neighborhood Council is here as the voice of our local community and I promise to continue to serve to the best of my ability. Please join us and get involved! Come to one of our meetings which are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 6:30 PM at East Valley High School, 5525 Vineland Ave, North Hollywood, CA 91601.

One time there was only one place in L.A.
where one could 'speak his mind'.
Nowadays anyone and everyone of
all creeds
can be anyway they care to be.

Back then one would get downtown some way
by trolly, bus, car or walking to get to their place of
freedom, and this was not so long ago.
It was not so automatic to address one's ideas, as now.

Remnants from ww1 and ww2 when security was at it's upmost,
people had few areas to express themselves,
something we now expect any day and everywhere.

During World War I, the Square was often the scene for militia
receptions and provided a forum for public speakers.

In November 1918, a week after
Armistice Day ended World War I,
the park was renamed Pershing Square,
in honor of
Gen. John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing

The park is exactly one square block in size, bounded by 5th Street
to the north, 6th Street to the south, Hill Street to the east,
and Olive Street to the west.

During these decades up through the sixty's the park was
lined with palm trees and walkways around the perimeter.

A Speakers' Corner is an area
where public speaking is allowed.

The original and most noted is in
the north-east corner of Hyde Park
in London, England.

buildings in the background,
people enjoying a sunny California day.

In the photo below we see those cement walkways filled
with people on either sides all engaged in many,
yet similar activities, at their 'speakers corners',
freely expressing any views they want.

Here is OUR L.A. HISTORY,
that in our modern times,
it has always included a place for
anyone to 'get up on their soapbox'
and express any views and debate with anyone on any subject.

Welcome Home Vietnam Vets Picnic in NoHo Park

Congratulations to community leader David Hernandez who put on a great picnic in NoHo Park to honor our Vietnam Veterans, marking the first annual LA County Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day on March 30. The picnic was an opportunity for vets, family, friends and supporters to get together and have a great time. Monday, March 30th David Hernandez will lead a rally in support of the veterans on the steps of City Hall with the hope next year of a parade.

• MY METERED DAYS IN L.A.
( NoHo too! )

While there are no 'parking meters'
in Sunland Tujunga where I now live,
my hometown North Hollywood
and most of the City of Los Angeles,
not only have these metered parking
areas, but the fees to use them have
increased substantially.

There are new 'pay stations' near where you park with the
convenience of paying the vastly
increased rates with your credit/
debit cards; do not forget which
'number' your vehicle is parked at.
In North Hollywood the City just
raised the rates using the old meters.
Maybe because the 'pay stations'
DownTown L.A. are at $ 3.00/Hr and the
fees in NoHo are just $ 1.00/Hr.

I work in DownTown L.A. and see the parking
'stations' on a street that goes over the freeway,
where people walk to go to the courts or the Cathedral
(which charges $ 5.00 in their building lot).
The fee to park on the street is now $ 3.00/Hr.

You might as well let 'G-d' watch over your car.

Oh, I forgot to say that the times at these meters have
also increased such as from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. now to 8 p.m.
There goes dining, art openings and stage plays,
DownTown L.A., Hollywood or NoHo.

In Chicago the people have, well, revolted somewhat on
this issue when their meters went to $ 4.00/Hr and to 9 p.m.

They started breaking meters.
This is not a cry for this type
of behavior here, yet we can
protest using words to our
elected officials and our votes.

I paid my $ 1.00/Hr the other day when I went to my eye
doctor on Lankershim, parking on the side street Weddington.
I used to throw in a dime.

In NoHo DO NOT park
at the Metro Station BAD, BAD.
This is illegal and your vehicle
could be towed and fined.
-UNLESS you first ride the
escalator down to the Subway
pay machines,
BUY A TICKET ($ 1.25)
and go back up to your dining, art etc.

-at least you paid the fee as if you were on the train.
Kosher, maybe NOT, but at $ 1.00/ Hr metered parking,
you might sneak a savings depending on your stay at NoHo venues.

Finally PLEASE NOTE:
smashing parking meters and using
the Metro Lot ARE VIOLATIONS
so one may be WARNED !

Also, if time allots you could take a ride on the
Metro Redline
to Hollywood or DownTown L.A.,
which is always fun,
and this would fullfill all the legalities,
who says you can't eat, watch a play and work out at your gym BEFORE your Metro trip.

Parking Meter workers Scamming locals

I personal fitness train at a gym on Lankershim Blvd near Weddington Blvd in NoHo. It recently came to my attention of a long term client of the gym who was parked in a meter outside the gym on Lankershim. She went in on Tuesday, Feb 17, 2009 at 10a for her usual 10am appointment with her personal fitness trainer which always lasts one hour. As usual she put her $1.00 for one hour into the parking meter at 10a, and went in the gym where she checked in at the front desk, and started her workout with her trainer

At 10:52a she was horrified to see a parking meter worker putting a ticket on her windshield. When she quickly went out to confront the meter worker, she was told that she was getting a ticket, even with 8 minutes still left on her meter. "Why...How?" she asked, and was told by the unconcerned meter worker that "your only legal to park for one hour... so you or somebody else must have put an extra dime in the meter after your hour expired". The victim explained that she was still within her initial hour with 8 minutes still to go and she was just finishing up on her one hour workout that began at 10:00am sharp. (In fact, there is proof from the gym's computer that she checked in at the front desk at 10:00am promptly as usual.) The parking meter worker at 10:52am that morning seemed to care less, and simply left to apparently go about finding more victims of this scam along Lankershim Blvd in NoHo.

He's big...he's fast...and he was pumping up his adrenaline on an eliptical machine at BodyImage Gym in the Noho Arts District when he saw the purse snatcher taunting the BID Street Teams who couldn't catch up to him on Lankershim Blvd. "In an instant, I flew off the Eliptical, out the gym door, and onto the sidewalk where I caught up and passed the pursuing BID Street Team guys and tackled the purse snatcher and pinned him down", says Matt Burch, local Fitness Trainer and Television personality of the hit show "Operation REPO".

Matt, who many co-workers (including me) know as a really "Teddy Bear" kind of a guy underneath his rough, tough exterior, says what he did was community focused and not a show of bravado or testosterone. "I want to tell people not to engage in this kind of thing if they don't have to, I have a martial arts background and have been pumpin' iron for years, and it was really an instinctual thing that happened really quickly...I just saw those BID guys not being able to catch up to the purse snatcher and reacted."

NoHo Parking Meter Outrage

In a business busting move to suck a few more dollars out of City residents, Los Angeles has imposed massive increases on parking meters Citywide - some as much as $4 an hour - and increased the hours in the day the meters run.

While merchants from Highland Park to Chatsworth are up in arms, nowhere is anger greater than in the fledging NoHo Arts District. Theatre owners are aghast that formerly free nighttime parking is no longer available and are finding impratical for patrons to step out of a production to feed the meter. An aide to Councilman Tom LaBonge has told NoHo theatre owners their office is "looking into it" but local business owners hold out little hope for relief.

NoHo Tower A Lonely Place

The San Fernando Valley Business Journal reports that three years behind schedule and following flip-flops between going condo and then back to rentals, the NoHo 14 Tower across from the Metro Station now has four residents.

According to the Journal an 850 square foot one bedroom unit goes for $2300 a month. Most of the neighboring new properties go for less than that. As the paper notes a similar unit at the much tonier Americana at Brand in Glendale is about the same rate.

In the meantime JSM, the developers of the Tower, have sold three other developments in NoHo and is reportedly "on-hold" with their most recent development at Vineland and McCormick.

In January of this year we re-enacted the Treaty of Cahuenga
which was was signed between Lieutenant Colonel John C. Frémont
and General Andrés Pico in 1847, ending hostilities in California
between Mexico and the United States. The subsequent
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848, ceding California
and Texas to the United States. Here is this year's celebration.

Railway that blanketed Southern California from the early 1900's
until the Freeway Age of the 1950's.

The San Pedro Waterfront Red Car runs from Port's of Call to
to the Cruise Center Fridays thru Mondays serving the tourist
community enjoying this area.

NoHo has talked about a NoHo Street Car,
WHY NOT US !
THE vintage street cars available
are up to date are handmade,
and as the one's above, and
are made here in Los Angeles.

Of course, I 'photo-enhanced' the pic to make it look like olden days,
I even took out the bridge, doing it just to show you it is not history.

The California Car seen below is historically correct
with original coloring, wood paneling and seating
just like a hundred years ago, and even better.
With this knowledge you know
that a NoHo Street Car is a viable,
and I say a necessary addition to our NoHo Arts Distict
and it is a project we should invest in for North Hollywood.

To bring you up to date, this is the block of stores that are
now Radio Shack, Smart n Final and Rite Aide and Ralph's.
There was a bakery, different type now, and the Deli
was a small walk back into middle area.
We went to the Deli here, or the one in the market on
Victory where the theaters are now at Coldwater.

We usually got three sandwich meats;

Then go to the Bakery to get a Rye Bread or Chale (egg bread)
or even a variety of Kaiser Rolls.

...a comment on the guy
who cuts the meats.

Oh, well, now we have to go to Jerry's or Canter's,
I found great Corned Beef in Burbank of all places
at Ben's Deli cl∆ic(ummm) I travel because there
are NO deli's ('Jewish') up in Sunland Tujunga
where I live now... but those weekend meals, WOW !

A Theatre Grows in NoHo

This development is the final piece of the CRA's "NoHo Commons" project which has brought several hundred apartments and shopping including the legendary HOWS Market to the NoHo Arts District.

YUMMY PROPOSITION

Lankershim & Weddington will soon be a ' better place ',
part of the new NoHo. There will be an office building with
10,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space; a 30,000-
square-foot, seven-screen Laemmle Theater, with a 10 year
lease, and a 700-space parking garage.

The 1920s era Phil's Diner
designed in a railroad car style
by Charles Amend and with a
distinctive neon sign overhead,
serving generations

in the SanFernando Valley located on
Chandler Boulevard.
The diner will be relocated within
the project and the diner's missing, original sign recreated.

A New life for Phil’s Diner

The 1920’s was the era of the dining car style “diner”. One of the grandest examples was in North Hollywood and was called Phil’s Diner.

The North Hollywood (then called “Lankershim”) Southern Pacific train depot opened in 1892. For the first thirty or so years it served principally as a shipping point for the area’s rich farming products. By the early 1920’s North Hollywood had become a bustling well-to-do town. In 1923 nearby Toluca Lake was created as a first “bedroom community” for Los Angeles in the Valley. In that same year Lakeside Golf Club opened. By the 1920’s the Lankershim train depot served as many passenger trains as freight trains and the depot needed a restaurant for passengers to eat while they waited. To serve that need, Phil’s Diner was created.

Phil’s Diner was designed by Charles Amend, and like so many other famous diners of the day (including the famed Pacific Dining Car in downtown Los Angeles ) the building was essentially pre-fabricated and moveable on the back of a flatbed. A diner like Phil’s was often moved from the original location. The diners were even made to look and feel like a railroad “dining car”.

As the years passed by, the train depot finally closed and then North Hollywood transitioned from a thriving community to a blighted and forgotten industrial area, Phil’s fell on hard times. The original distinctive pink and black colors become faded and began to peel. Many of us – who just loved the history behind Phil’s – would still make the occasional visit and sit either at the wooden counter or at the single line of small tables. By the end you usually found yourself alongside a blue collar worker or a new immigrant, enjoying what was certain to be a one way ticket to heartburn; but it didn’t matter, because it was Phil’s.

Finally, Phil’s died. The last “blue plate” special was served and the doors were locked – it seemed likely – for all time. After several years of boarded doors and windows, the little building was raised on timbers and moved several blocks from the original site, where it now sits on a vacant lot behind a locked construction fence.

On March 20th Phil’s Diner was given new life. The CRA Board approved a plan for a new modern office building, a luxurious Laemmle’s 8-screen Theater, and a restored and operating Phil’s Diner. The Diner will be moved to the corner of Lankershim and Weddington – across from the El Portal Theater – where it will be restored to its 1920’s condition and reopen as a restaurant, and to become the centerpiece of the theater courtyard.

The effort to save Phil’s was the work of many, including Councilman LaBonge, the CRA, the property developer, the current owner of Phil’s and Laemmle’s Theaters. The community must also be acknowledged for their diligent efforts to protect and restore Phil’s. At the CRA hearing to approve the project, a broad section of the community came to speak in favor of the motion. In fact, twenty five people spoke all in favor of the project, with an (almost unprecedented) no one opposed. NoHo Lofts Commercial

The developers of the NoHo Lofts have produced a short video that's available on YouTube. The project, in the former Adolphs Meat Tenderizer factory, has received a lot of acclaim for how the building was redeveloped and how it has worked with the surrounding community.

The building features office condos geared towards the artistic and entertainment communities but under the City's live-work ordinance for NoHo business owners could also live in their condo as well.

Friday Night at HOWS

Friday night I left work and had visions of joining some friends, watching the Laker game and enjoying a fine margarita at Splash Bar at the Beverly Garland.

I got there and alas, it was not to be. Three people occupied Splash Bar and they were intent on a Faith Hill concert. As I sat down, my BlackBerry went off with a text message - my friend was going elsewhere and the plans were off. Thankfully, I found out the parking lot ticket for the Beverly Garland had a half hour grace period so I was not stuck alone with a margarita, tourists and Faith.

So it was head over to the Wine Experience at HOWS Market. Good thing it was, though I did not get my margarita HOWS was packed with the usual crowd.

Bill was behind the bar assisted by the lovely Elece. Riley, with his pretty wife Cass next to him, was holding court discussing everything from the Space Program to the way to a woman's heart. He also taught me how to drink wine, something I really do need to learn.

The regulars - Lisa, Glenn, et al trickled as well as a few others. Quite frankly the place was packed as we watched the Lakers win. Bill was kind enough to treat me to a HOWS cheeseburger.

As the evening wore on, Lisa, Glenn and friends gathered up a crew for a late night dinner at Spark Grill. A gracious invitation I received, but the aforementioned cheeseburger nixed that. We closed the wine room down and then it was time to do a little grocery shopping; how handy it is to drink and hang out in a supermarket.

when K mart bought out Sears
they divested some of these properties
to Home Depot. While HD pays these
leases, some communities have
RISEN-UP to challenge
the big company's aspirations...

My Mother called it
"Valley Pleasure",
it was a place
to shop,
go to the park,
play in the wash.

A place of my
enthnicity -delis and bakeries, shoe and candy stores.
Sears, See's, Woolworth's, Wetherby Kaiser. The foods
from the onion rolls and corn beef to the Chef's BBq.

The Naval Reserve, the heliport where the freeway
is now by Victory Blvd. The "Air Raid Shelter"
sales lot where you could go down into the safety
you could have 'built at your house'. The fad of
trampolines which you 'rented time' to jump.
(I was too scared to do it) J.C. Penny, Longs Drugs
the stores behind Sears, oh you can see this area
on 'Reno 911' TV comedy all filmed here in NoHo.

Alexander's Market
that had a Coke machine that dispensed 8oz bottles
so cold there was frosty iced coke, I think back,
the original 'slurpee'. The market became a theater.
Other stores in this part next to the park were
a barber and hair salon, a Two Guys, remember,
Italian food, and this was originally a
Curries Ice Cream Parlor with the 'mile high cone'

The Lamplighter Restaurant which I fondely
remember as a Van De Camps Restaurant
I went to many times even though it had the 60's
notoriety of having a Civil Rights Sit Down
because the waitresses were, well like the name,
Scandinavian, you know all 'blonds'.

There has been much talk about the growth
of DownTown L.A., lofts, art districts and
bringing back the Red Cars which were rail
lines that went from Canoga Park to Big Bear,
and Seal Beach to Santa Monica. You can
probably say, 'we got freeways to all these
places' and you would be more than correct.
Cars and Trucks and Buses follow these

routes and in our future, now, we have a couple
of rail lines that approximate those tracks.
If you go to San Pedro there is a small line
using a couple of newly made reconstructions
that run daily basically for tourists. They
want to add more to this line to expand on
the growing arts disrict in San Pedro.
The L.A. DownTown News says that would be
great for Broadway and that area's new growth.
